Seven I Am statements of Jesus
The Book of the Gospel of John has seven statements by Jesus starting with 'I am..'
Here are the basic statements, some statements that follow and some implications or points of interest.
Jesus saying 'I am..':
- the bread of life - John 6:35
- the light of the world - John 8:12
- the gate - John 10:7
- the good shepherd - John 10:11
- the resurrection and the life - John 11:25
- the way, the truth, and the life - John 14:6
- the true vine - John 15:1
Additional follow-up statement(s):
- Whoever comes to and believes in Christ will never hunger and thirst - John 6:35
- Whoever follows Him will never walk in darkness but have the light of life - John 8:12
- He is the gate for all sheep to go in and come out of protected from thieves and robbers, and able to find pasture - John 10:8,9
- If the wolf comes, He lays down His life for the sheep - John 10:11,12
- Whoever believes in Him will live on after death and never die - John 11:25,26
- No one comes to the Father except through Him - John 14:6
- The Father cuts off any branch that does not bear fruit and prunes a branch that does bear fruit to be even more fruitful - John 15:2
Implications or points of interest
- Christ covers our true needs so that we lack nothing real.
- He gives us what we need to proceed and see what's before us.
- He secures us in both directions - to go out and find what we're looking for and to return safely.
- He sacrifices Himself rather than let us be taken by a predator.
- He promises us eternal life after death.
- He states clearly that He is the only way, the only truth, and the only life.
- He warns that we need to bear some fruit, but also that we may be made to bear even more fruit if we are bearing some to start with!
